Getting Science Funding

Improve Your Grant Proposal Success With Our Training

Getting Science Funding interactive workshops will teach you proven strategies to improve your proposal writing.Modern education in science demands experience with sophisticated, often expensive, laboratory equipment as well as original research, even for relatively inexperienced undergraduate students.

Yet the process of writing research and programmatic proposals to support those opportunities can be a time-consuming, frustrating, and intimidating experience for science faculty who have not yet had success in winning grants.

Getting Science Funding demystifies the grant award process. With our training, you, your staff, and your students will fully understand the grant process and improve your ability to win external funding for research.

We offer flexible services for your needs. Click on the links below to find out more about our services and fees.

  • The grant proposal review and ranking process.
  • Smart choices of funding agencies and grant programs.
  • Making smart selections in funding programs.
  • Mistakes that can easily turn a great idea into an unfunded proposal.
  • How to profit from denial of funding.
  • How to "bootstrap" local assets into fundable research.
  • And more...

Getting Science Funding Workshops

The Getting Science Funding Workshops are lively and interactive. Our workshops present a lively mix of lecture, question and answer, and pen-to-paper writing exercises, facilitated and critiqued by an experienced proposal writer and grants administrator.

Participants have the opportunity to sharpen their insight and skills in a relaxed and informal atmosphere rich in information, anecdote, and insight.

In all phases of the workshops, questions based on individual participants' experience or problems are encouraged and addressed.

Half-Day Workshop

In our popular Half-Day Workshop, there is much opportunity to share and learn. An introductory discussion presents:

  • The structure of science funding in the United States.
  • The management and review of proposals by the major funding agencies.
  • The best strategies for choosing agencies and writing proposals.
  • An introduction to persuasive scientific writing.
  • A review of the importance of the title and abstract.

Examples of strong (and not so strong) titles and abstracts are provided by the presenter for critique and group commentary. Participants divide into working groups to produce a draft proposal title and abstract for research on a major facet of their scientific discipline. Mock proposals for historic scientific achievements such as plate tectonics, the structure of DNA, operant conditioning, or chemical periodicity are encouraged.

Time permitting, the rough abstracts are collected, presented, and constructively critiqued by the participants, now acting in the capacity of a funding panel.

Consider the additional helpful topics covered in our Full-Day Workshop!

Faculty who wish to explore particularly troublesome issues such as response to denial, the problems of beginning a research career at a lesser-known institution, and establishing productive relationships with funders and reviewer, should opt for the Full-Day Workshop.

Our Full-Day Workshop

In addition to providing more time for writing and critiquing exercises, the Full-Day Workshop covers all topics offered in the Half-Day program and offers further plenary and roundtable discussions of:

  • Improving a denied proposal.
  • Ethical and collegial relationships with funders.
  • Relationships with program officers and reviewers.
  • The wise management of the grants resulting from successful proposals.
  • Use of initial funding to maximize the probability of future success.

One-On-One Consultations and Counseling

One-on-one counseling may give your proposal just the professional review needed to secure your success. Our experienced presenter can meet with individual scientists, or teams of scientists and faculty working on a current proposal for research or an institutional grant. Some of your staff may need counseling or mentoring about a recently denied proposal, with an eye to improving its chances for success on resubmission.

In all cases, we provide careful advance reading and a written critique of the new or denied proposal, advice in regard to the emphasis, organization, and clarity of writing, and follow-up consultation on future drafts of revised proposals.

You may choose our Counseling/Coaching Consultation in conjunction with a workshop or separately by phone or by e-mail.
